Portland's mix of nature and industry

Here are some other shots from my recently developed film. These first two are particular favorites of mine. This first is a car dealership off of Sandy Blvd near Burnside (on a typical Portland dark and rainy day)

and this second is a thrift store somewhere around 82nd Ave and I-205 -- if you take Sandy Blvd all the way out into the Northeast part of the city...

here's one more old-looking Portland bulding shot -- this in Southeast Portland, in the old industrial area down by the river and railroad tracks...

Below are a few that show Portland's unique mix of nature and industry. This first is a bike path along the Columbia Slough in North Portland.

These following images are three different shots looking west from an overpass near the tip of Portland's peninsula (it's called a peninsula because the Willamette and Columbia rivers meet at a point on the north tip of the city). You can see the West Hills in the distance. I think the second of these three is my favorite, but I'm not sure. I think maybe it becomes too ordinary when it loses the fence in the foreground (in the last photo). what do you think?

one last landscape shot for now-- sunset along the Willamette -- from Southeast Portland, facing downtown...

and then a very different shot -- from my trip to Estacada for the 4th of July parade -- this is from the Safari Lounge in downtown Estacada (famous for their stuffed animals) -- here are a couple of polar bears chearing on the parade.

(by the way, the baby on the sliding board in my shots from the fourth of july I sent out yesterday was not a real baby, in case you thought it looked a little odd, and maybe at risk sitting up on that slide by itself!)

ok, that's all for now...

Camera Truck

If you didn't catch this posting in today's nytimes online photoblog Lens, here's the world's largest camera(?)! The guy uses a truck as a portable camera, with a lens on the side truck --making huge 7 foot by 3 1/2 foot negatives and prints!! And here is a link to the photographer, Shaun Irving's website. Pretty cool stuff -- and hooray for analog photography!!

William Eggleston on NPR

photo © William Eggleston

I've been meaning to send out these links on NPR's reporting of the William Eggleston show (in Washington DC) for several days. If you didn't catch the radio piece, or would also like to hear more of the interview with Eggleston, and see some of his images, click on the highlighted text above.

A couple of random images

shot these yesterday -- this first is through a window/door of a racketball court at the Portland State University...

... and here's squashed cherries on the sidewalk in front of my house, from the cherry tree in our front yard.

Portland summer fun

I spent this week teaching "street photography" to middle school and high school students -- and I managed to snap a few keepers for myself. Here's a couple from Gresham High School. There was some sort of summer community program going on at the school-- and we wandered onto campus into the pool area...

and then out back onto the track.

a couple of women: one shot from the MAX lightrail (headed into downtown Portland)...

the other a storefront in the Hollywood neighborhood.

and these last four from today at the fountain in downtown Portland along the riverfront.

More southern color

Here's a couple more from my trip to the south -- folks tubing on the Chattahoochee river in Helen, GA (or at least getting ready to go tubing, and returning on the bus to the parking lot aftewards... )

here's the inside of a 19th century church in Louvale, GA.... thinking of Walker Evans' church shots from the south.

saw this storefront window in Lumpkin, GA.

last for today: rode with my friend jimmy to get some charcoal for our cookout -- up in White Co. Ga, here's the view across the dashboard of his F150...
